Moms Demand Action for Gun Reform with Jackie Shelley
In this robust conversation, Jackie shares several pieces of good news where this fight is concerned and gives us not only hope, but also next steps. It’s a must-listen, especially for those of us who are looking to understand exactly how this affects us all, but especially people of color.
This was not clearly stated in this conversation, but deserved to be: “Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. They experience 10 times the gun homicides, 18 times the gun assault injuries, and nearly 3 times the fatal shootings by police of white Americans.” (from the Everytown website)

Jackie Shelley is the SC state leader of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America--the leading force for gun violence prevention, with chapters in all 50 states and a powerful grassroots network that works at the local, state, and federal level to create change. Upon graduating Clemson University, Jackie taught high school English and served as yearbook adviser in the public school system. After deciding to start a family, she became a stay-at-home mom and weekly volunteer in her kids' classrooms. Devastated by the mass shooting of first graders at Sandy Hook elementary, Jackie started the Charleston, SC group of Moms Demand Action and has served in a leadership capacity ever since. She lives in the Charleston area with her husband, two sons, and a space-invading pug named Zelda.
Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. We pass stronger gun laws and work to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. We also work in our own communities and with business leaders to encourage a culture of responsible gun ownership. We know that gun violence is preventable, and we’re committed to doing what it takes to keep families safe.
